Synergies between EPA and WTO Negotiations for trade promotion in Central Africa: Regional Workshop on Coherence (in French)

Yaoundé, Cameroon
10-12 September 2007

Central African countries are engaged in two major sets of negotiations: at the World Trade Organization - WTO and with the European Union on an Economic Partnership Agreement – EPA.  Both are scheduled to conclude in the near-term; as a result there is a need to adopt a coherent approach within the two negotiating frameworks. In particular, the commitments entered into must be in conformity with the process of regional integration and national trade policies. This workshop will examine synergies between the two negotiations to consider the expected engagements by Central African countries. The workshop will review legal options and consider approaches for durable solutions, including on Aid for Trade. Four specific issues will be considered:

  1. Consolidation of the tariffs in the WTO’s non-agricultural market access (NAMA) negotiations;
  2. Trade facilitation;
  3. Services; and
  4. Aid for Trade and support for supply-side capacity.
