African Union/RECs Workshop on Trade in Services In Collaboration with ILEAP and AfDB

Lusaka, Zambia
29-30 March 2012

Under the auspices of the African Union, the continent has embarked on a process for the establishment of a continental Free Trade Area and boosting intra-African trade, using the RECs as building blocks. Recalling the importance of services - both as an avenue itself for economic diversification, as well as an essential input to agriculture, manufacturing and industry - increasing the share of intra-Africa trade will require according high priority to service sector development.

In this context, and on the basis of recent ILEAP research, the meeting convened representatives of Africa's RECs, alongside representatives from the private sector and international institutions. In doing so, participants discussed the establishment of a platform for the RECs (and other relevant stakeholders) to share experiences on regional services integration, liberalization and sector development. Participants also deliberated on possibilities for continent-wide approaches, including the potential role for the African Union Commission and its partners.
